ChatGPT SEO is the work of making your business findable, understandable and recommendable in ChatGPT's answers. It overlaps heavily with ordinary SEO, but ChatGPT finds information in two different ways, and each one rewards different things.
This guide explains how ChatGPT decides what to say about a business, the one technical setting that can keep you out of its search answers entirely, and the practical changes that make you more likely to be named.
How does ChatGPT find information about businesses?
| From its training | From searching the web | |
|---|---|---|
| When it is used | General questions, when ChatGPT does not search | Current, local or specific questions, when ChatGPT searches |
| Where the information comes from | Text the model learned from before its training cutoff | Live web pages found at the time of the question |
| How fast changes show up | Slowly, often not until a newer model | Within days or weeks |
| Shows sources? | No | Yes, as links in the answer |
For local and service businesses, the search side matters most. Questions like "best electrician in Annapolis" usually trigger a web search, and the answer is built from the pages ChatGPT finds and cites.
Which OpenAI crawlers should you allow?
| Crawler | What OpenAI says it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Crawls pages to show them in ChatGPT search results | Your pages will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers |
| GPTBot | Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models | Your content is not used for training, with no effect on search answers |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT to | OpenAI notes robots.txt rules may not apply, since a person asked |
Check your robots.txt today. Some security plugins and hosting setups block AI crawlers by default, and a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is excluded from ChatGPT search answers no matter how good its content is. OpenAI says changes take about 24 hours to take effect. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice about training, and you can make it without affecting search.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own technology, without naming them in its help pages. Bing has been widely reported as one of them. In practice, this means being indexed by Bing matters. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap there, and check that your key pages are indexed. Many businesses have never looked, because Bing sends little direct traffic.
What makes ChatGPT recommend a business?
When ChatGPT searches, it reads several sources and combines them. Businesses that are named tend to have three things in common.
- They are described clearly and consistently across sources: the same name, services, location and details on their website, maps listings and directories
- Other sources talk about them: reviews, local news, industry lists, comparison articles and forums
- Their own pages answer the question directly, in plain language near the top of the page
The second point is where most ChatGPT SEO effort pays off. If every answer about your industry cites the same few directories and articles, getting listed accurately in those sources often matters more than anything on your own website.
How is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?
| Google SEO | ChatGPT SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you compete for | A position in a list of results | A mention in a written answer |
| How many get shown | Ten organic results plus the map pack | Often three to five businesses |
| Crawler to allow | Googlebot | OAI-SearchBot |
| Index that matters | Google's | Third-party providers, reportedly including Bing, plus OpenAI's own |
| Weight of other sites | Important, mostly through links | Very important, through mentions, reviews and lists |
| How you measure it | Search Console | Prompt tracking and referral traffic |
The overlap is large. A site with clear pages, strong local signals and a good reputation tends to do well in both. The differences are mostly in what you check: Bing indexing, the OpenAI crawler and the third-party sources that ChatGPT cites.
Where do you start?
- Today: check robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, and verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools
- This week: ask ChatGPT what it knows about your business and note anything wrong
- This month: correct those details on your site and the listings ChatGPT cites, and rewrite the opening of each service page to state plainly what you do and where
- Every month after: track a fixed set of prompts and keep earning mentions on other sites
How do you optimize your website for ChatGPT?
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, and make sure your key pages are indexed in Bing
- State plainly what you do, where, and for whom, on the home page and every service page
- Put the direct answer to each page's main question in the first paragraph
- Keep your main content in the HTML, not only loaded by JavaScript, since many AI crawlers do not run scripts
- Give each service its own page, so there is one clear page to cite for each topic
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data with your details and links to your official profiles
- Publish specifics that other pages do not have: prices, process, timelines and real examples
How do you get mentioned on other sites?
- Get listed accurately on the directories and review sites that appear in ChatGPT's answers for your industry
- Build a steady flow of genuine reviews on Google and the platforms your customers use
- Earn coverage in local and industry publications, for example through HARO alternatives
- Turn existing mentions into links and accurate descriptions with link reclamation
- Fix wrong details wherever they appear, starting with NAP consistency
What does not work?
- Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI tools, which are a manipulation attempt and a risk
- Mass-produced pages targeting every possible prompt
- Paying for placement in lists that present themselves as independent
- Assuming a single test answer proves anything, since answers vary between sessions
How do you know if it is working?
Track a fixed set of customer prompts each month and record whether you are named, as described in our guide to tracking ChatGPT brand mentions. Also watch your analytics for visits from chatgpt.com, which ChatGPT often tags with utm_source=chatgpt.com. Rising mentions and rising referrals together are the clearest signal that ChatGPT SEO work is paying off.
The short version
ChatGPT SEO starts with letting OAI-SearchBot in and being indexed in Bing, then making your business described clearly and consistently across your site and the sources ChatGPT reads. It is ordinary good SEO with more weight on third-party mentions. For the full picture, see what AI visibility is, or have it handled through our AI visibility optimization service.
