What changed

Two thirds of US searches end without a click in 2026.

Search changed shape in the United States before it changed anywhere else. SparkToro measured 68 percent of US Google searches ending without a click between January and April 2026, up from roughly 60 percent two years earlier. OpenAI reported 2.5 billion ChatGPT messages a day in July 2025. The question is no longer only where a business ranks, but whether it gets named at all.

We tested that directly. Asking four AI tools to recommend a roofer in one town on the same day produced thirteen different companies, and not one appeared on all four lists. The reasons the tools gave had little to do with Google position: review counts, license numbers, profile fields, a press release, and pages about the town itself.
