ChatGPT brand mentions are now something you can measure, even though ChatGPT does not report them to you. When a customer asks it to recommend a business like yours, it either names you or it does not, and that answer is shaping decisions you never see in your analytics.
This guide shows how to track whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews mention your brand, what to record, how to read the results without fooling yourself, and when a paid AI brand monitoring tool is worth it.
Why is tracking AI brand mentions hard?
Three reasons. There is no equivalent of Search Console for ChatGPT, so nobody hands you a report. Answers change between sessions, users and days, so one check proves little. And the same question asked in slightly different words can produce a different list of businesses.
None of that makes it impossible. It means you track a sample, the same way a poll measures opinion, and look for patterns over time rather than reacting to a single answer.
How do you track brand mentions in ChatGPT by hand?
Start with a fixed list of prompts, and ask them the same way every month.
- Write 10 to 20 prompts a real customer would type, such as "best roofer in Lexington Park" or "who should I hire for local SEO in Maryland"
- Mix recommendation prompts, comparison prompts that name a competitor, and questions about a problem you solve
- Include two or three prompts that use your brand name, such as "is Your Business Name any good", to check what the AI says about you
- Run each prompt in a fresh chat, ideally logged out or in a temporary chat, so past conversations do not shape the answer
- Ask each prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, since each draws on different sources
What should you record each time?
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mentioned: yes or no | The core measure, tracked as a share of prompts |
| Position in the list | First named is worth far more than fifth |
| How you are described | Wrong services, old details or a weak description need fixing |
| Competitors named | Shows who the AI sees as your alternatives |
| Sources cited | Perplexity, ChatGPT search and AI Overviews show links, which tells you where the answer came from |
| Date and platform | So you can compare like with like |
After a few months, the useful number is your mention rate: the share of prompts, across platforms, where you are named. That trend tells you more than any single answer.
What does a good prompt set look like?
Here is an illustrative set for a family dental practice in Annapolis. Swap in your own services and towns.
| Type | Example prompt |
|---|---|
| Recommendation | Who is the best family dentist in Annapolis? |
| Need-based | I need a dentist in Annapolis who sees kids and takes weekend appointments |
| Problem | My tooth cracked and I am in Annapolis, where can I get seen today? |
| Comparison | Is [Competitor Practice] or [Your Practice] better for families? |
| Brand | What do people say about [Your Practice] in Annapolis? |
| Brand facts | What are [Your Practice]'s opening hours and does it take my insurance? |
The brand facts prompts are the quickest win. If ChatGPT brand mentions of your business carry the wrong hours, an old address or services you stopped offering, that points straight to the listings and pages that need correcting.
How often should you check?
Monthly is enough for most businesses, on the same day each month. Check more often for a few weeks after a big change, such as a rebrand, a new location or a press campaign, to see how quickly AI answers pick it up. Answers that draw on live web search, as Perplexity, ChatGPT search and AI Overviews do, can change within weeks. Answers from a model's built-in knowledge change far more slowly.
How do you read the results without fooling yourself?
- Do not judge from one run. Repeat important prompts two or three times and record the majority result
- Do not compare months where you changed the prompts. Keep the set fixed and add new prompts as a separate group
- Separate brand prompts from discovery prompts. Being described well when someone names you is different from being recommended when they do not
- Watch the sources. If every answer cites the same directory or article, that page matters more to your AI visibility than your own website
Where else can you see AI mentions?
Check your analytics for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. When ChatGPT links to a site, it often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the link, which makes those visits easy to separate. Rising AI referrals are a direct sign you are being recommended, even though they will not show every mention.
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode appear inside ordinary Google results, and their clicks are counted in Search Console's web performance data rather than in a separate report.
When is an AI brand monitoring tool worth paying for?
Manual tracking works well up to around 20 prompts a month. Beyond that, or if you need daily data, competitor share of voice or several brands, an AI brand monitoring tool saves real time. Dedicated trackers such as Otterly.ai and Peec AI run your prompts automatically across platforms, and the big SEO suites, including Semrush and Ahrefs, now include AI visibility reports.
| Manual tracking is enough when | A tool is worth it when |
|---|---|
| You serve one town or region | You compete nationally or in many markets |
| You track 20 prompts or fewer | You need hundreds of prompts tracked |
| Monthly checks are enough | You want daily or weekly trends |
| You only watch your own brand | You need competitor share of voice |
Whichever you choose, check how a tool collects answers. Some query the platforms' APIs, which can answer differently from the apps customers use. Perplexity brand monitoring is the easiest to verify by hand, since every answer shows its sources.
What do you do when ChatGPT does not mention you?
Look at what it says instead, and where that came from. AI tools recommend businesses that are described clearly and consistently across sources they trust: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and mentions in articles. Our guide to what AI visibility is and how to fix it covers the causes, and how local businesses get found in AI search covers the local version. Earning mentions in publications, for example through HARO alternatives, adds the third-party sources these tools draw on.
The short version
Tracking ChatGPT brand mentions means asking a fixed set of real customer prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month, recording who gets named and why, and watching the trend. Start by hand, and move to a monitoring tool when the prompt list outgrows a spreadsheet. If you would rather have the tracking and the fixes handled together, that is the core of our AI visibility optimization work.
