How many backlinks do I need to rank? There is no universal number, and anyone who gives you one without looking at your keyword is guessing. But you can work out a realistic target for your own keyword in about half an hour, using the pages that already rank for it.

This guide shows the method, explains why you should count linking websites rather than links, and covers the cases where more links will not help at all.

Why is there no single answer?

Because links are relative. You do not need a set number of links. You need enough to compete with the pages Google is already choosing for that search. For a plumber in a small town, that might be a handful of local links. For a national software comparison, it could be hundreds of websites.

Links are also only one input. Relevance, content quality, search intent and internal linking all matter, which is why a page with fewer links sometimes outranks one with many more.

Should you count backlinks or referring domains?

Referring domains, meaning the number of different websites linking to you. One site linking to you from 500 footer links is still one site's vote. Ten separate, relevant websites linking once each is a much stronger signal. When you see a backlink count in a tool, look for the referring domains figure next to it and use that.

How do you work out your number?

Five steps, using any backlink tool such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz.

  • Pick one keyword, the one your target page is meant to rank for
  • Search it and list the top ten organic results, skipping ads and the map pack
  • Remove results you are not really competing with: Wikipedia, big marketplaces and national directories
  • For each remaining page, record the referring domains to that specific page, not to the whole website
  • Take the median of those numbers. That is your rough target for the page

Use the median, not the average. One outlier with thousands of links will drag the average up and make the target look impossible when it is not.

Here is an illustrative example for a mid-competition local service keyword. The figures are made up to show the method, not taken from a real search.

ResultReferring domains to the pageKeep?
National directory listing1,200No, not a real competitor
Competitor A service page14Yes
Competitor B service page22Yes
Competitor C home page9Yes
Industry blog article31Yes
Competitor D service page6Yes

Sorting the five kept results gives 6, 9, 14, 22 and 31, so the median is 14. A realistic plan is to earn around 14 relevant referring domains to the page over time, while making sure the page itself is as good as the best of them.

Do page links or site authority matter more?

Both, in different ways. Links to the page itself help it rank for its keyword. Links to the website as a whole build general authority that every page benefits from through internal links. A new page on a strong website can rank with very few links of its own. A strong page on a brand-new website usually cannot, however good it is.

That is why checking the domain figures matters too. If every ranking page sits on a website far stronger than yours, your target needs to be higher, or you need an easier keyword first.

How do you check how many backlinks you already have?

Start with Google Search Console, which is free. The Links report shows your top linked pages and the sites linking to you, taken from Google's own data. It undercounts compared with paid tools, but it only shows links Google has actually found, which makes it a good reality check.

Paid tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz each run their own crawlers, so their numbers will differ from each other and from Google. That is fine. Pick one tool and use it for both your site and your competitors, so you are comparing like with like. Working out how many backlinks you need only makes sense if both sides of the comparison come from the same source.

What changes the number you need?

FactorEffect on links needed
Local search with few competitorsLower. Local relevance and Google Business Profile carry more weight
High keyword difficultyHigher. Difficulty scores are largely based on the links of ranking pages
Your page matches search intent betterLower. Google rewards the right kind of page
Strong internal links to the pageLower. You pass authority from your own site
Links from relevant, editorial sitesFewer needed than with low-quality or unrelated links

When will more backlinks not help?

More often than people expect. Check these before building anything.

  • The page is not indexed. Check it in Search Console first
  • You already have more referring domains than the pages above you. The gap is content or intent, not links
  • Google shows guides for the keyword and you are pushing a sales page, or the reverse
  • Two of your own pages target the same keyword and split the signals between them
  • The page is slow, thin or harder to use than the competition

How fast should you build links?

At a pace that looks like real interest. A sudden jump from five referring domains to two hundred in a month, with no news or campaign to explain it, is what bought links look like. That is the pattern behind most of the cleanups in our guide to toxic backlinks and disavowing them. Steady, relevant links earned through useful content and outreach are slower and far safer.

For ways to earn them, see link building strategies that work in 2026, including the broken link building method.

How long do new backlinks take to work?

Usually weeks to a few months. Google first has to find the linking page, which can be quick for a busy news site and slow for a small blog. Then the link has to be counted alongside everything else about your page. Judge a link campaign over a quarter, not a week, and watch the target page's average position in Search Console rather than daily rank checks.

What counts as a relevant link for a small business?

  • A site in your industry, such as a trade association or supplier
  • A site in your area, such as local news, the chamber of commerce or a community group
  • A site your customers read, even if it is not about your industry directly
  • A page whose topic matches the page it links to

A plumber linked from a regional home improvement blog and the county business association has two strong, relevant links. The same plumber linked from fifty unrelated directories has mostly noise.

The short version

How many backlinks do you need? Roughly the median number of referring domains pointing at the pages you are competing with, from sites at least as relevant as theirs, after you have made sure links are really what is holding you back. Frequently asked questions

How many backlinks per month is safe?

There is no safe number, only a natural pattern. Links that arrive steadily from relevant sites, with spikes that match real events like a launch or press coverage, look earned. A sudden jump with nothing to explain it looks bought, whatever the total.

Do I need backlinks to rank locally?

Fewer than for national searches, but usually some. In the map pack, your Google Business Profile, reviews and distance matter most. For local organic results, a few links from local sites such as your chamber of commerce, local news and community groups often make the difference between page two and page one.

Is it better to have more backlinks or more referring domains?

More referring domains. Ten different relevant websites linking to you once each is a stronger signal than one website linking to you hundreds of times, because each separate site is an independent vote.
